Describe      A directory (or folder) is a location for files. It is a more organized way of storing files and keeping things separated on your hard disk.
The following procedures explain how to make a directory in different environments including DOS, Windows 3.1 and Windows 95. Either version of Windows can use the DOS method also.
Of course, if the directory already exists, you don't need to make it again. If you try, a message will appear telling you it can't be done.

DOS
Method
To make a directory in DOS, type the following:
MD\dirname

Where: dirname is the name of the directory you are making.

Results: A directory named C:\dirname

Windows 3.1
Method
This procedure will describe using the File Manager in Windows 3.1. Open the 'Main' group and select the 'File Manager'.
Inside the drive C: window, make sure the ROOT directory (C:\) is highlighted like the figure below. If you are making a subdirectory of another directory, make sure you are highlighting that directory.

Then to make a directory, go 'File', 'Create Directory', then type in the new directory name like the figure below.

Windows 95
Method
This procedure will describe using the File Manager in Windows 95. Click 'Start', 'Programs', 'Windows Explorer'.
Make sure the ROOT directory (C:\) is highlighted like the figure below. If you are making a subdirectory of another directory, make sure you are highlighting that directory.

Then, select 'File', 'New' and 'Folder'. The Windows Explorer will create a new folder and prompt you to name it.
