Nampa Optimist Club

Nampa Optimist Club

A great bunch of people dedicated to helping the youth in our community. We have done a lot in our short history. The Nampa club has only been around since 1996.

Currently, we run the Nampa Optimist Football program which dovetails with the Boise Noon Optimist Football program. Our first year out (2000), we had 247 kids playing football. We currently play on the 25 acre Nampa Optimist Park with 7 football fields that we recently developed with the City of Nampa. It takes about 3 miles of sprinkler pipe just to water the grass!

Some of our regular annual projects include Santa Claus Letters, Playgrounds with jungle gyms and skateboard parks, Golf Mentoring with the Nampa Youth Golf program. Sometimes we just help individual kids achieve their dreams.

The Great Pumpkin Race

The Great Pumpkin Race

This fun run was started to benefit Northwest Children's Home and Syringa House. It includes a 5k and 1 mile run or walk. The 1 mile race is designed for kids. The parents are encouraged to run with their kids, but they can watch from the middle of the park.
Everybody has a good time with their kids. There are healthy snacks and activities for everyone. The kids from Northwest Children's Home and Syringa House learn more about community service (and enjoy it). It is also a way for both homes to thank the Nampa community for all the great support they receive throughout the year.

Phone Petition

For years, we endured long distance charges between Boise, Nampa and Caldwell. In May 1995, Bridge the Gap and later Valley Link services were terminated by the Idaho Public Utilities Commission (IPUC).
I decided that we should have a local calling area and started a petition to make this request. It took two years but I followed the process to completion.
At the completion of the project, I found that we not only saw a change in the Treasure Valley, but other metropolitan areas of Idaho reaped benefits as well.
  • April 1999, US West expands Boise, Nampa, Caldwell area to include Weiser to Glenns Ferry, one of the largest local calling areas in the United States. Idaho Press-Tribune, Feb 1, 1999
  • April 1997, US West initiated Local EAS calling area.
  • September 1996, after 15,000 signatures came in, the IPUC approved Local EAS calling area and directed US West to make it so. Idaho Press-Tribune, Sep 1996
  • September 16, 1996, IPUC Public Hearings. Made public testimony. Also encouraged everyone I could to also provide testimony or at least show up, thus showing the IPUC that we care. The room was full! Thanks everyone!
